As a result, plaque builds up even more quickly, leading to dental decay and the possibility of gum disease.

You usually think about your jaw as being solid like a rock, but when you are growing your jaw is really more like clay. If you apply pressure to your jaw, you can get your jaw to stretch, it can get wider, or it can be moved back. Still, the important thing is that when your braces pull on your jaw, the braces change the shape of your jaw. In the same way, if you push on your teeth, your teeth will move around in your mouth. The orthodontist uses that fact that he can apply force to get your jaw and teeth to move, to stretch your mouth so all your teeth fit.

the jaw bones will harden and stop growing. Orthodontic procedures for adults often take more time and can involve tooth extraction or oral surgery.
Receiving early orthodontic treatment as a child can help prevent the need for orthodontics as an adult, leaving little to no chance of extraction or surgery in the future.

Patient started treatment at age 11 and wore braces for 12 months. He loves his new smile.
Patient started treatment at age 11 and wore braces for 12 months. He loves his new smile.
This adult patient, age 25, required braces and jaw surgery to correct his severe overbite, with treatment taking two years. His problem could have been corrected without surgery if he had been treated at around 11-12 years of age.
This patient's lateral incisors were missing. She had braces for 10 months to move the teeth into their correct positions, then the missing teeth were replaced with dental implants.
Patient's under bite was causing her jaw joint discomfort and excessive wear patterns on her teeth. After about 24 months of treatment starting at age 32, she now finds smiling and chewing much easier.
Patient was bothered by the spaces between his teeth. Braces closed the spaces and gave him an ideal bite in 12 months. Special fixed retainers help keep the spaces closed.
At age ten, patient had a big overjet with the top teeth protruding beyond the bottom. She had two phases of treatment. The first helped her jaws to grow more harmoniously and the second aligned her teeth and bite. At age 13, she was proudly displaying her new smile.
Sometimes braces are not needed to get noticeable improvements in tooth alignment. This patient was first seen at age seven for crowding of the lower permanent teeth. A procedure was performed to reduce the width of the adjacent baby teeth and the permanent incisors aligned on their own in nine months without braces.
Patient's parents were concerned about both aesthetics and the health of the erupting permanent teeth when they brought him to the us at age 8. The lower front teeth were crowded and touching the palate, and the upper front teeth were extremely displaced from their normal positions. After 12 months of Phase-One braces treatment with an expander, patient's appearance and dental function were vastly improved.( he later needed short phase two braces for 8 months at age 13 for final alignment )
Most adults get orthodontic treatment because they realize that taking care of their smile is part of taking care of them self.
Many people did not get braces when they were young. Either their parents were not aware of their problem or they could not afford braces,
or their teeth could not be straightened with the techniques of 40 years ago. Now they have realized problems with their teeth and gums and are unhappy with their smile.
They can afford braces now, and want to do something for themselves so they get braces.
Presently as much as 1/3 of the orthodontic treatment being done at our clinic is for adult patients.
It is revolutionary change from 20 years ago when orthodontists were only mainly treating children.
